There is no “Good” or “Bad” design in Product Designing. It may be an unfinished v/s refined design rather. In Product Deigning, Good or Bad are relative terms with respect to individual user or society. One may find a product most appropriate but on the other hand someone may not find it so.
Product has a very long journey from drawing board to market. It starts from Idea and ends at ready to use product in the market. Refined design takes much time from board to market. Because of such long duration, one may compromise on many important aspects and release it unfinished.
So, what are the yardsticks for judging between refined and unfinished design, few are listed here (but not limited to),
- Idea / Innovation
- Research & Development
- Marketing Aspects
- Functional Aspects
- Operational Aspects
- Durability Aspects
- Dependability Aspects
- Aesthetic Aspects
- Ergonomic Aspects
- Manufacturing Aspects
- Standardization Aspects
- Simplification Aspects
- Specialization Aspects
- Economic Aspects
- Value Aspects
- KISS (Keep it Simple Stupid)
Qualitative and Quantitative Product Analysis can reveal different merits and demerits of design. Product Design, which comply most of the aspects, is a refined one. Designers must understand this that their job don’t end with release of drawings, they must work for continual improvement of the products.
Market acceptance and / or profit generation are the aspects in consideration but not the dominating one. Surprised!!! For a designer, Product Characteristics are the most important thing to incorporate in proposed product. A refined product is mostly accepted by market and therefore generates profits.
Designers must understand that different users of product are having different level of skills, exposure and knowledge, hence, they should design product suitable for masses for ease of operation and with fool-proof-ness. A user-friendly product is always welcomed by the society.
Many times, products are launched with unfinished design because of various reasons. There is always scope for improvement and calling back products. Calling back is acceptance of unfinished work. But it is not wrong, society understands the concern and lets it go.
So, please modify your views on design, replace “Good” with “Refined” and “Bad” with “Unfinished”…
Refined Design – Unfinished Design
